First Lady Melania Trump and Madame Peng Liyuan Visit Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art Highlighting Sino-American Artwork, Culture, and the Next Generation

First Lady Melania Trump and Madame Peng Liyuan visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC today, where they explored works spanning centuries of artistic achievement and cultural exchange and shared a special moment with students from the Washington, DC area. Upon arrival, the First Lady and Madame Peng were welcomed by leadership of the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art before beginning their tour of the museum’s collections. The First Lady and Madame Peng then viewed the Smithsonian’s celebrated Peacock Room, one of the museum’s most distinctive and immersive works of art. Created by American artist James McNeill Whistler in 1876–77, the Peacock Room transforms an entire interior into a dazzling composition of blue, green, and gold. Inspired in significant part by Chinese porcelain and Japanese design, Whistler covered the room with shimmering patterns and fanciful depictions of peacocks, creating a singular work in which painting, architecture, and decorative arts converge. Purchased by American collector Charles Lang Freer in 1904, the room was transported from London to the United States and has been a centerpiece of the museum in Washington since 1923. Today, the Peacock Room stands as a remarkable meeting point of American art and Asian artistic traditions, reflecting the ways artists and collectors have found inspiration across cultures and generations. The First Lady and Madame Peng continued their visit with a viewing of a Qianlong-period Chinese porcelain vase, dating to the 18th century. Produced in Jingdezhen during the Qing dynasty, the vase features elaborate floral decoration executed in colorful famille rose enamels, gold, and iron red over a pale glaze. The work is part of the Freer Gallery of Art’s collection and reflects the extraordinary technical and decorative sophistication of imperial Chinese porcelain during the Qianlong era. Museum leadership who served as guides for the visit were Jan Stuart, Melvin R. Seiden Curator of Chinese Art at the National Museum of Asian Art, and Chase Robinson, Dame Jillian Sackler Director of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and Freer Gallery of Art. The visit concluded with a musical performance by the youth choir from Hope Chinese School, who performed “Jasmine Flower” and “Songs & Smiles” for the First Lady and Madame Peng. The young students’ performance offered a joyful and memorable conclusion to the visit, bringing together the beauty of artistic expression, the appreciation of cultural heritage, and the shared experience of young people discovering the enduring power of art and music.
