Senate Narrowly Rejects War Powers Limit on President Trump — For the 20th Time

By a single vote, the U.S. Senate once again rejected a resolution that would have limited President Trump’s authority to engage in military action without congressional approval. This marks the 20th War Powers vote in recent years — and yet another failed attempt by lawmakers to assert congressional oversight over the executive branch’s use of force.

The vote was notable for its cross‑party fractures. Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy broke with most of his party and voted in favor of limiting Trump’s war powers. Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman sided with Republicans and voted against the measure, arguing that restricting the president during an active global conflict could undermine national security. His vote drew criticism from progressives who say Congress must reclaim its constitutional authority over war.

The resolution would have required Trump to seek congressional approval before expanding military operations, particularly in the Middle East as tensions with Iran continue to escalate. Supporters said the measure was necessary to prevent unilateral action and avoid dragging the U.S. into another prolonged conflict. Opponents argued it would tie the president’s hands and send a message of weakness to adversaries.

With this latest defeat, Congress remains sharply divided — and the president retains broad latitude to conduct military operations without additional legislative checks. The narrow margin underscores how contentious war‑powers debates have become, and how unusual alliances are forming as lawmakers navigate the political and security landscape heading into the election season.
